FAWN RESCUE
Every year, around 400,000 fawns die in Germany during the mowing season. They are severely injured by the mowing equipment and die a miserable death. Why don’t the fawns simply run away? Fawns are hidden by their mothers in the long grass to protect them. They do not have a flight reflex in the first few weeks of their life: Instead, they crouch down on the ground at the first sign of danger and freeze. This hiding instinct is designed to prevent them being discovered by natural predators. During the mowing season, this natural defense mechanism is fatal as the fawn does not run away from the mowers but remains crouched in the grass. Who can help? Clubs are organizing fawn rescue initiatives. The fawn is our LÄSSIG trademark animal. This is not the only reason its well-being is so close to our hearts. We support the fawn rescue initiatives of the Tierschutzinitiative Odenwald e.V. (Odenwald Animal Protection Group e.V.) with a monthly donation.
The initiative is committed to ensuring that meadows are scanned before being mowed and all protective measures for the well-being of these endangered woodland animals are in place.
How does the rescue initiative work? Farmers provide advance notice of their mowing schedules. The fawn rescue team publishes these schedules as quickly as possible on the internet, informing the registered helpers. Then they scour the areas to be mowed in rows. If a fawn is found, it is packed in thick layers of grass and carried to the edge of the field. No human scent must be left on the fawn. The fawn’s mother then finds the fawn again by calling it. Fawns are not taken away to be reared by people.
